Repeating error in XP

I'm receiving the following error every time I start up Windows XP.

STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER

In addition my PC is rebooting itself whenever I run certain Windows
Updates. (inc but not exclusively 922819, 922582 and the IE 7 upgrade)

These two errors started occuring at the same time so I assume they are
somehow linked.

I have attempted all the suggested troubleshooting ideas including the
following
- Turning down the hardware acceleration,
- Turning down my resolution and refresh rates,
- Updating my video drivers to the latest version,
- Replacing my video card with one that definately works &,
- Running the updates one at a time.

I really don't know what to do next. Could someone please suggest where I
should go from here.

Thanks in advance.

Many updates *require* a reboot.

<QP>0x000000EA: THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER

A device driver problem has caused the system to pause indefinitely (hang).
Typically, this is caused by a display driver waiting for the video hardware
to enter an idle state. This might indicate a hardware problem with the
video adapter, or a faulty video driver.

Thanks for you response Peter. There was plenty of information on that
website but unfortunately there was precious little to help me with my
issue/s. Any other suggestions? Cheers.

The reboots are occuring prior to the updates finalising. Typically the
update will start to initialise and then restrart the computer without any
warning. The update will then still be waiting to be installed the next time
I boot up. Once the reboot is finished I am advised of the same Stop error.
In addition, the Stop error will continually reappear if I submit the error
report to Microsoft.

Yes I have read it. That KB article is the same one that I receive a link to
after each stop error is submitted to microsoft.

I have done everything that the article suggests but am no closer to solving
the problem, which is why I have turned to this discussion group.

I'd appreciate any other suggestions from you or anybody else.

Thanks again.

Unless you've recently installed a new video card (or the one you have now
is starting to fail), all I can suggest is that you review these related,
archived threads:

Windows Update newsgroup: http://snipurl.com/1a0j7

WinXP General newsgroup: http://snipurl.com/1a0j1

All MS newsgroups: http://snipurl.com/1a0iz

Best of luck.

I don't think he has provided enough information to know which driver
is causing that stop code. I suspect that video driver is merely a
common example that KB293078 is providing. Since he wants to highlight
the patch about IPv6 (922819) it might make just as much sense to focus on
a driver which supports his network adapter.

However, as always I think that trying to diagnose such issues in here
is like running down the street chasing a truck to ask its driver
a question about a problem you noticed since the new appliance
which it just delivered was installed. ; )
