It seems likely that your Office 2003 installation is damaged. Have you at
any time recently used a so-called "Registry Cleaner"? If so, it is
possible that your registry is now damaged in respect of the Office 2003
entries.

For instance, the Windows Live Safety Center registry scan might cause these
problems.

If this case applies to you, you should back your system up to a time before
you used the registry cleaner.

There is a special fix if you used the Windows Live Safety Center: please
ask for it if you need it.

I am running Norton System Works and using Norton Win Doctor's Registry
cleaner.

I have not used Windows Live Safety Centre.

It seems other users are also experiencing the same probem as me. See Posts

Are you able to back up to the time before you used the registry cleaner?
Does the registry cleaner have its own backup recovery feature?

Other things to try:

1. You need to be able to tell us what error code you are getting for these
failed installations, and that means fixing this:
>>> When I try to click on the red x,to determine the
>>> solution,nothing happens.

If nothing happens when you click the red cross "Failed" icon, then some
third-party software is interfering with the correct operation of Windows
Update. Please disable Norton and all other third-party popup-blockers
(such as anti-malware, firewalls, Google toollbar, and so on), and try
clicking the "Failed" icon again.

2. Ensure that the "Office Source Engine" service is not "Disabled". It
should be set to Manual start.

3. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884298

I have the exact same problem here, and I haven't run any cleaner of any
sort. Even after telling Microsoft Update that I do not want to be notified
about these two updates (because I'm not running Outlook), it keeps coming
back.

I have fixed the problem.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003.

While I was running Microsoft Update Norton Antivirus shut down and the
updates installed correctly.
