Replacement for dead server

I hope this is not too obvious a question, but if a member server (win
2003 or 2008) dies and has to be replaced, can I just build a new one
with the same name, IP etc. and unleash it on the network or given the
MAC will change do you have to remove references to the old one first.

If the latter – how is this achieved?

Thanks
John
