Does anyone know how to change Windows Update settings to require user
confirmation before rebooting? I left a very complicated set-up of programs
on my taskbar last night, and Microsoft's unauthorized shut-down wiped it
out. I am ... Particularly Irritated Software Strong-armed, Effectively
Destroying my work. Don't preach backups - this is different. My work
environment stays up for days, sometimes weeks before a reboot. I lost more
than an hour putting it all back.

So how do I tell the Big Boys they need my okay before rebooting? Thanks.

Turn off automatic updates and update your computer yourself when you are
ready to update.

Microsoft's "unauthorized shutdown" was pre-authorized by you choosing to
allow fully automatic updates - your bad - now you know better. ;-)

Nice try at an acronym...

Why would anyone preach backups - you were *running* the programs - backups
are unlikely to help other than perhaps with the data being generated by
said running applications. To keep it running is what you want - yet you
previously (automatic updates) gave control of the download/installation and
further action necessary to complete said installation away if you chose
"Automatic Updates".

Now - if you are in a domain and your domain administrators are whom your
complaint is with for having pushed the updates and forced said reboot upon
you - that's a problem you can take up with them and their settings for your
computer.

Thank you, Shenan. It took more research to find where to change my
WinUpdates settings, but all is well now. Much obliged.
