Required Services for WU won't start

I recieved the error message that one of the three required services for
Windows update would not start. I checked the services and sure enough the
update service and BITS were not started when I attempt to start Bits I
receive "Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service
on Local Computer refers me to the event log, where there is no mention of
the service failure, and then refers to Bits service specific error code
-2147014851. The Automatic Update Service will not start and reports "Error
0x8007273d: The attempted operation is not supported for the type of object
referenced." I am assuming this relates to bits but wanted to include it just
in case. Any advise on this would be appreciated. I can't find this Bits
error in any of the popular newgroups or search engines. Thanks.

Ufff.... i think that the outputs commands is OK,

maybe you could try to reinstall de BITS service with this command.

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%SystemRoot%\inf\qmgr.inf

reboot windows and check if your problem is solved, if not, review de
Event Viewer (control panel > administrative tools), and in the system
log, search "errors" with source in BITS, the information regarding
Event ID, Source and Description are important. if the errors appears
post the content completely

Unfortunately the command will not run it gives an error that installation
failed. There are also no items in the event viewer related to Bits. Thanks.

It's strange....

some program installed (malware maybe...) are interfering with the
wuauserv (Automatic Update Service) and bits service.

Please, download HijackThis, and post us the log.
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

type this commands also, and post the output.

sc qc wuauserv
sc queryex wuauserv
sc sdshow wuauserv

I have the same problems only i managed to install bits again. After the
installation and the reboot when i try to start the bits service it returns
"error 2: the specified file cannot be found by the system" (or something
like that - it's a translation from greek). I also post the results from the
commands you suggested to the other user:

C:\>sc qc bits
[SC] GetServiceConfig SUCCESS

C:\>sc queryex bits

You're right. Let's try some inferences about it.

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/wuc.htm

It's not in there but we can find in there 0x8007276B
and it apparently is related to symbolic code WSASYSNOTREADY

Searching with that symbolic code we find:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...or_codes_2.asp

and in there we find a decimal number beside it: 10091
guessing or otherwise check that 10091 == 0x276B

So now we can see if your code is related to the decimal equivalent
of its lower half too: 0x273d == 10045

and then we can find:

<quote>
WSAEOPNOTSUPP 10045 Operation not supported.
The attempted operation is not supported for the type of object referenced.
Usually this occurs when a socket descriptor to a socket that cannot support
this operation is trying to accept a connection on a datagram socket.
</quote>

Ok... so that confirms the text that you saw in your log.

It also makes fermu's idea about malware look reasonable.
E.g. once you have eliminated malware one of the *final* repair steps
will be (in a cmd window):

netsh winsock reset

Good luck
