I was complaining a day or two ago that it's difficult to burn CD-R and
DVD-R backups reliably, and that the shelf-life is unpredictable.

It's getting a bit OT, for this NG, but I found some studies by the French
National Archives. It's in French of course but there's plenty of readable
information in coloured tables.

The studies show that not all drives and makes of disk are equal. Also, my
mistake was to think that it's best to burn at the slowest available speed.
In fact, 16x is best for a CD.

Regards

To read the PDF try:

[Bing Translator]
http://www.microsofttranslator.com/

Much better interface than Google's, and more accurate translation too.

Thanks, I'm bilingual and don't hold anyone's shares.

It can be fun to translate an innocent document succesively through a few
languages, returning to your own.
