Hello world,

sorry for my bad english....

Configuration:
Windows Server 2008
DNS installed
Win XP clients

I have the following problem:
A server is registered in the DNS with his 2 NICs:
DC2008 ............192.168.1.1
DC2008 ............192.168.1.2

When the Clients ask the DNS for "DC2008" the Clients gets alsways
192.168.1.1.
But:
I need the Clients to get 192.168.1.2
Means I want to change the order of the IPs within the DNS-Server.

Is therer a possebiltiy?

Thank you very much.
Gernot

No, there isn't a possibility to do that. What is occuring is that DNS is
using Round Robin to rotate the responses, so some get the one IP, and
others get the other IP. This is default. If you only want to resolve to one
IP, disable registration on the other NIC. However, if this is a domain
controller, that is much more difficult and requires registry entries to
stop registration, which I may add, that a multihomed (more than one NIC)
domain controller is not advisable or recommended due to the multiple DNS
registrations.

Those two IPs you provided are on the same subnet. This brings up a question
as to why are two NICs on the same IP subnet (same segment)? Why not just
team them so they work together with a virtual IP for the teamed NIC? That
is much better and reduces confusion, and only one IP gets registered.

Hello Gernot,

Please explain why you are using 2 NICs in one network segment. This can
create more problems then solving them.

Best regards
