Hi all-
Recieved a response via email from MS Tech Support.
Very prompt, courteous and corporate so no complaints there......but the gist
of the advice was to turn off automatic updating and try an'express' manual
download from the Update Site and to get back to them if it doesn't work.

I asked if this problem (which TONS of people are having) was a 'known
issue' but he declined to answer that one!

Will try this in a mo but it seems rather too obvious to work? Anybody
already tried it?
Have also d/loaded Robbies direct link to the KB892130 file but haven't
installed it yet in case it makes things worse.

I'm sure MS must be aware of the problem by now.
Surely it is not in their interests to crash everybodies Update facility?

And yes Carey...MS are happy that my copy of XP IS 'genuine'!!

No...this didn't work either, but thanks for the effort floricicia.

This is maddening, absolutely maddening. Absolutely no support posts or
explanations from M$...nothing except the sarcastic snide comments from the
lurking MVP Carrie, telling us we're all thieves & criminals....way to go !!

Here's the irony...the underground seems to have this cracked already in
less than 48 hours, while us honest legitimate purchasers are penalized,
ignored & told we are all a bunch of thieves, all because of M$'s
over-the-top paranoia.

The contents of your DataStore folder may be the problem.

1. Delete the contents of the DataStore folder
2. Click Start.
3. Choose Run.
4. In the Run box, type: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
5. Click OK.
6. Open the DataStore folder.
7. Delete all contents of the DataStore folder.
8. Close the window.
9. Reboot and revisit the Windows Update web site.

Hmmm....are you sure I want to delete these.
My Datafile contains a few 'edb' logs all 128kb in size, and (interestingly)
a tiny file with cogs on it labelled edb.chk -'recovered file fragment found
when your disk was scanned'

I'm understandably wary of deleting anything that might adversly affect the
system-ie. I don't know what these files are for!
Thanks for your input anyway

Hi,

You can safely delete the content in the Datastore folder, or just
delete the Datastore folder itself (it will be automatically recreated
next time you visit Windows Update).

Note that a side effect of renaming or deleting the Datastore folder is
that you lose your current Windows Update History listing (this is not
critical).

Also note that you should stop the Automatic Updates service before
deleting the Datastore folder to avoid possible file lock issues, and
that when deleting the Datastore folder, you should also delete the
Download folder (found under SoftwareDistribution) as well.

floricicia, you can always copy the folder's contents & store them elsewhere
as a backup. You can always restore the deleted files by over writing the
folder's contents if something goes haywire.

One of the files is locked by another window's process & won't let you
delete it. You can use an unlocking utility like Unlocker (freeware)
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ which works well, or you can delete the
file in safe mode.

Long story short: it didn't work for me, but others may have a different
outcome.

Oops, sorry Torgeir...I didn't mean to step on your toes. We both posted at
the same time & I didn't see your post when I posted mine.

I tried your additional suggestions, but my results were the same...I'm
still locked out of the Updates.

I've spent parts of 2 days now obsessing over this issue...it's time to move
on for me & get on with other parts of my life now. Hopefully someone at MS
will make some sense of this in the next few days.

Thanks for your input though.

Oh....thanks guys.
I've squirrelled this info away to try later on.
I'm kind of assuming that MS will 'fix' this eventually....reading around
other web forums suggests that this isn't the first time this has happened
and MS cannot surely expect my mum to start hacking her registry!

It is heartening to know that so many others have the same problem and -
galling as it is ;trying to fix MS's problems is one way of finding out more
about how your pc works (or not, in our case!)...for instance...I've just
discovered a tool called 'Manage Add-ons' that I've had no reason to go to
before....it says you can reinstall the ActiveX component of the Validation
tool....but I don't suppose this will help either.

Lets hope something turns up?
Thanks
flo

Ouch. I can feel your frustration from here. There is a fellow named
John Caldwell at Microsoft who has taken an interest in this problem.
Perhaps his efforts will bear fruit soon.

In the mean time, I posted a suggestion to this ng (Topic: "KB892130
Failure: Another Solution"). It is a bit involved, but it has worked
three times now.

Best of luck to you!
