Hello,
Running vista 64 and this used to work. I think it stopped working when I
successfully backed out SP1. (it didn't work with SP1 on either)

The system goes into hibernation ok (pc powers off etc) but when I press the
power button on again the system does NOT recognise that the last shutdown was
hibernate state and thinks the system failed to come down properly. No
apparent attempt is made to RESUME.

There is a error message - 'The previous system shutdown was unexpected' but
I think that is because it has failed to notice it should be doing a resume.
No other event messages found.

Actions I have taken to resolve this are:
I have reviewed these forums without much luck.
Deleted / created the hibernation file
Reviewed the event logs
Pulled my hair out.

Anyone any thoughts?

Right it's been 2 days and replies....
I've sorted it so I will briefly detail what I had to do to fix this. Maybe
this will help someone else.

I recently replaced a faulty system disk. I had a lot of trouble getting the
system to boot and I think I screwed something up here.

My problem, the system never tried to resume.. got me thinking that it might
have something to do with BCD.

Turns out I was right.

I changed bios to point to the new disk for booting and rebuilt the BCD
system.
There are various threads detailing how to do this on the VistaBootPro
website.
Sound simple but it took several tries. I used 2 tools VISTABOOTPRO 3.3 and
EasyBCD.

Hello bugo,
I'm happy to help but can you detail the following:
Your boot disk (set in bios)
your system disk as stated in DIsk Management (should be the same as set in
bios)
your boot disk as stated in Disk Management
could you please dump your BCD using VistabootPro (view settings / all
/select all / copy and paste here
state the number of disk you have and in what order they are listed in disk
Management
how many os you have installed. Dual boot is it?

and finally confirm that your system hibernates succesffuly but fails to try
and recover from hibernation.

hi again!
thanks for answering so quickly!
first: i recovered my system with a backuptool, so it runs again without
sp1, all back to normal. would it help, to copy a bcd from the present
sys.status?

now the details:
i only have 1 harddisk with 2 partitions and that's the one in the bios.
bot-sequence is: 1)dvd, 2) floppy, 3) harddisk. i changed that, to boot from
hd first, did not help.

in diskmanagement its disk 0 with 2 partitions, C (system+ start part.) and
L for data, but L-partition is the first and C is coming thereafter (a box
with L and a second box with C) is this a problem?
i used to have dualboot on the old hd (worked ok), than i used a second, new
hd and copied vista (which was the default os) to the new harddisk and
finally erased xp from the old hd. shortly thereafter i removed the old hd
from the pc and all was running fine (incl hibernation) with vista (NO sp1).
after downloading sp1/rc1 all worked ok, but not the wakeup from hiber. it
goes into hiber ok (pc off) but when waked up, it doesn't resume, there is a
black screen and it says "win was not shutdown correctly and you may select
from 'normal start' or 'safe start' ....and so on.
i have a laptop with vista home premium and sp1 work ok on this system.

i add the dump from bcd BUT ITS FROM PRESENT STATUS WITHOUT SP1 !!!

Thank you once more for your help, good evening from Austria

good morning brink!

after installing sp1 rc1 and running into this hibernation problems i
uninstalled it via system control, as explained in the preinstall infos, but
that didn't help. there was no more sp1 on the system, but the hiberproblem
was still there.
so i rebuildt it with a backup software to the pre-sp1 state and it worked
ok again.
thank you for the link. i am running vista ultimate x32 and i think, these
instructions are mainly for x64.
maybe the problems are coming from transforming vista from a dualboot system
(first there was xp, then i added vista) to a new harddrive without xp now.
but as i said, it work fine without sp1 on the new hd with vista only.

thank you
greetings

Good Morning Bugo,

Glad to hear you got it going again. If you run across it again, you
might take a look through this to see if it can help your troubleshoot
the problem.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/63...-problems.html

The instructions are usually all for 32 bit and 64 bit Vista. The
"Applies To" to the right will let you know for what versions.

Have a great day,
Shawn

bugo,
glad to hear you are back up running again. Not much point looking at your
config now you have it running again. The main point with this problem is
that the BCD file became corrupt / broken and resolution was to rebuild it.
In the end I just added a new entry folllowed by a reboot, then did a
hibernate and it started to work.
