After reinstalling Windows XP, SP2 because of a hard drive failure, how can I
get windows update not to pop up with the message that the computer has to be
restarted for updates to install, restart now or restart later and this keeps
popping up every 5 minutes, rather than installing when computer is turning
off?

You can't. Give up. Close all applications and then restart.

Otherwise configure updates to notify only and then download and install at your
convenience.

Tip: don't allow updates if you aren't prepared for the reboot which may be
required to do the final replacement of their modules.

You shouldn't reply if you can't be helpful. All I wanted was my computer
back the way it was and I was reaching out to more knowledgeable people than
I, not expecting to receive smart-aleck replies.
