restarting interrupted update installation

I inadvertantly restarted my computer while it was installing XP and Office
updates. How do get installation to continue?

But....what if you can't connect to the internet BECAUSE of the interrupted
update?

Use Safe Mode and System Restore.

my computer won't restart or shut down without me having to power it off. so,
i can't get to safe mode. System Restore encounters error 1053. is there is
another way to get to safe mode?
