Restarting update on 8/12

I have Windows 98SE on a Dell XPS H 233 that ran fine until I put the update
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB896727)
into the computer. It wouldn't restart five times in a row. It froze. My
solution to the problem has been to very quickly type in my password with the
enter key at the network sign in box. Now it restarted. It must be loading
differently that way.

First: Find the setting to reset.
Second: Read and Research it on net.
Third: Reboot.
Fourth: Rename noncritical files.
Fifth: Delete.
Sixth: Install software again.
