Restarts without scheduled updates?

Hi Guys.

As some of you saw lower down i had issues with scheduling restarts and such
for my clients and in the end configured machines to install updates on
shutdown and specifying in GPO that the shutdown default should be "install
updates and shut down".

The configure au is set to option 3, auto download and notify.

However after about half a week of the machines being set to do this they
are still restarting, i still have NO RESTART for logged on users enabled but
they keep restarting the clients.

I just had a class of 30 laptops bomb out in the middle of a lesson which
isnt what i want.

Why is this happening?

Steve

Post the logs of one of these machines that did what they did, and the logs
can be analyzed to identify exactly what happened.

The only way I know of, though, for an update to ignore the "No
Auto-Restart..." policy is if it had a deadline configured that expired
during your class and forced the installation of the update.

Hi Lawrence.

After further inspection i still have the reschedule restarts and such
settings configured.. for some reason they were still restarting the machines
even though configure au was set to 3.

Since i removed the settings to not configured everything seems to be
running fine and they are updating on shut down and requesting installation
during use by pupils.

All sorted!

Stephen, I can appreciate the fact that it appears as if this is what is
happening, but I can assure you that if AUOptions is, in fact, set to '3',
and the WUAgent is operating in AUOptions=3 mode, then the other settings
are being entirely ignored by the WUAgent, and something else is causing the
restart behavior.

Specifically which settings did you reset to "Not Configured"?

So I'm noting for the history that an an analysis of the actual behavior of
the clients was not discussed in this thread.

Thus, why the restarts occurred, and how they occurred, is still a matter of
assumption.
