How to restore backups from PC to HP IPAQ

For half a year I have collected regular complete backups of my HP IPAQ without
loosing the battery completely. Today it happened the first time. Now I find now
way how to restore the files I have collected. I have collected the backup files
in a separate directory chosen by myself and given names according to dates when
making the backups. Now when telling Active Sync to Restore the PDA from backup,
I get no choice whatsoever, from which file it should be restored, just the
announcement, that there is no file available. I must be missing something very
basic, I think.

Please give me a hint.
