in vista, suddenly favorites are gone because the location of the favorites
file is wrong! the good old favorites file is still there in documents, but
the path listed for favorites in IE is a non-existent folder in my 'music'
folder. so favorites comes up empty in the IE menu.
somehow it got changed. how do i tell IE7 (IE8 would not install on this
computer) where it's 'favorites' folder is? this should be the default
location, but where can i set it to that?i

In what operating system?

Try this and see if it helps:
You can change the value of Favorites in the Registry in these
two keys: (ignore the second if the value is not there)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

For Windows 2000/XP:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders]
Set the Favorites path to : %USERPROFILE%\Favorites

The above should be a REG_EXPAND_SZ value, not REG_SZ

I have the same problem, but your answer is too complicated for me and this
site http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/redxorg.htm=. does not work for me in
Vista IE 8 ( I can't get it to unzip). If I could get a simpler answer, I
would appreciate it

I made no mention of http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/redxorg.htm= or
even http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/redxorg.htm so I have no idea
where you got that from and what on earth you are trying to unzip.
