I just purchased an emachine with microsoft vista and part of the programs
was not there. The missing files was in windows.old file, but it would not
let me access them. I talked to a techwith emachines and they told me to
delete partions and restore vista with disk. i did but it did not bring back
the programs or windows.old. I have then talked to several techs since the
incident. no one can help me bring back the the deleted partions. any
suggestions to the problem.

You should not waste your time trying to recover a partition you have
written on top of with the new install. It's too late to recover the files.

The existence of Windows.old means that there was another OS on that
partition. Usually this folder is created on the same partition as Vista. It
contains most of the important folders (including Program files and
Windows/WINNT) from XP or whatever the OS was in there.

You could have accessed those files easily provided you elevated yourself to
administrative privileges. Is the folder still there or it is gone?

Files from the deleted partition can be recover using Easy File
Undelete:

http://www.munsoft.com/EasyFileUndelete/

It uses unique algorithms to recover files even if their location and
size is not stored in the file system structures.
