restore drive backup

model: hp a6120n
system: Vista home premium 32bit

Problem:
First time backup to cdr using system backup and restore program.
about 90 % in cdr backup. program aborted with file error message.
when Clicked on fix available the program started to write current backup
to the restore drive (d).
Now my restore backup drive is full.

I have ordered the restore backup disks.
have turned off automatic backup.

? Is there anyway I can take out the data in the restore backup drive and
save the original data in the restart drive.
? what is a good compatiable backup software program for Vista for external
backups.
