I need to restore these two files:

ksxbar.ax
from the Vista install DVD.

Is this possible and how?

You might be able to do a Repair install to lay down the O/S again. It will
repair the O/S but leave evrthing as is that is already installed such as
Word and other programs.

You should be able to use Google and find more indormation like how to
restore individual files from the DVD.

You can try to use SFC (System File Checker). Open a command prompt with
administrator privileges.

If you type SFC /? you will see the following:

************************************************** **************

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6000]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /?

Microsoft (R) Windows (R) Resource Checker Version 6.0
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Scans the integrity of all protected system files and replaces incorrect
version
s with correct Microsoft versions.

SFC [/SCANNOW] [/VERIFYONLY] [/SCANFILE=<file>] [/VERIFYFILE=<file>]
[/OFFWINDIR=<offline windows directory> /OFFBOOTDIR=<offline boot
directory>]

/SCANNOW Scans integrity of all protected system files and repairs
files
with problems when possible.

/VERIFYONLY Scans integrity of all protected system files. No repair
operati
on is performed.

/SCANFILE Scans integrity of the referenced file, repairs file if
problems
are identified. Specify full path <file>

/VERIFYFILE Verifies the integrity of the file with full path <file>.
No re
pair operation is performed.

/OFFBOOTDIR For offline repair specify the location of the offline boot
directory

/OFFWINDIR For offline repair specify the location of the offline
windows
directory

e.g.

sfc /SCANNOW
sfc /VERIFYFILE=c:\windows\system32\kernel32.dll
sfc /SCANFILE=d:\windows\system32\kernel32.dll /OFFBOOTDIR=d:\
/OFFWINDI

R=d:\windows sfc /VERIFYONLY C:\Windows\system32>

************************************************** *************

SFC will validate all of your original system files and replace those that
are corrupted/damaged.

As with anything that has to do with computers, nothing is 100% fool proof.
Create a system image before trying this repair. Many people use TrueImage
HOME 10.0 (build 8,027)

Hello Richard and thanks for the advices!
Actually you didn't got me right, because I explained my final goals in too
brief.
I do have a backup of my system.

I don't actually have Windows Vista installed on my computer. I just
installed Windows 2008 server yesterday and wanted to use the Video-capture
device, I tracked to find out why it is not working and found that these two
files were missing on the 2008 server. The closest version are the files
from Windows Vista, so I wanted to take these two files and patch my system.

I wanted to do this without having to install Vista and remove it right
after.
I have the files from my Windows 2003 SP2 Retail license, but this is a
completely different platform. The files work, but are not stable and
performance is degraded. The video plays a few continuous frames and then
jumps a few frames backward and so on.

Thank You for the replay anyway!

PS: The files should be here:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kstvtune.ax
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ksxbar.ax

Hello U. V. Bogden! Thank You very much for the help!
The files inside the "install.wim" are arranged in a way that represent the
structure for files and folders on the hard-disk after installation. Setup
simply extracts a part of the archive to the hard-disk and windows is ready
to go! This is realy a cheap and smart way to install windows. Well done
Microsoft!

The 7zip archiver supports it and can extract files from it. This is a good
alternative to installing a driver that mounts it in the file system.
