Restore files!

Following a reinstallation of my Vista, it refuses to recognize that I have
a backup set on my F: drive. I have tried copying this set to a portable
hard disk and using 'Advanced restore' but it still achieves nothing.
As the backup set contains the information I require, is there a way of
'opening' it to see my files and then transferring them to the required
location. The information is really quite important.
Hoping you can help
