restore point not working - new machine

just got my vista laptop and have loaded some apps

the restore points does not restore vista back - ie does not roll back

also loading apps which worked fine for years under me + xp.... now the help on these apps does not work
what next ?

any thoughts on eithe rof he abvoe appreciated
