Restore points added even when turned off?

SP1 turned on system restore without turning on system restore:shock:

I don't use system restore and had it turned off prior to SP1. I
noticed disc space declining, almost 5gigs since the update. When I
checked to see if SP1 turned it back on, it showed that it was still
disabled but with a "most recent restore point" dated March 18th!

System restore is off but creating restore points?! I turned it back on
and turned it off again, which eliminated the existing phantom restore
points.

This is the only glitch that I've noticed with SP1 on my system thus
far, but with "everyone else" having problems, this service pack is
without a doubt half-baked. I wonder what other SP1 mysteries await me?

You'll want to keep System Restore turned on. It's you last line o
defense against inappropriate changes to your system that may just sav
you one day from having to do a full reload

If you're concerned about disk space, you can always use the Dis
Cleanup utility (cleanmgr.exe) to clear the space used by older restor
points

I make a full backup image every week and backup all my data and
settings daily. System restore has actually burned me in the past: once
when my AV software found/isolated a false positive inside one of my
restore points (had to finally reformat to fix that problem); and
another time when it simply didn't complete its restore.

I've used system restore quite often in the past, especially when
testing software, but have found that it's not removed enough from the
system to ensure a clean point of recovery, if you know what I mean.

A weekly image session and daily data backups provide enough protection
for me. The system I use is actually more complicated than that, but
there you have it.

I reformat, whether I need it or not, at least 3 times a year.

very possible because you did the sp1 update, it did a restore point before the update.

What's puzzling is that system restore was disabled and the restore
points were still being made after March 18th. I only noticed it because
I was slowly losing disc space. I had to turn system restore back on and
then back off to clear the restore points, which gave me back nearly
5gigs of hard drive space.

I understand that service packs will occasionally enable things that a
user has disabled but not like this.
