Restore system restore

I did a stupid thing. I have spent 3 months on my 3 month old machine trying
to get software to work on Vista (like microsoft money 2007), only to find
that system restore doesn't work. The stupid thing was to allow a security
update to Money, which had an adverse affect on my DSL connection. I got the
net connection straightened out, but system restore still doesn't work. It is
on and enabled, and there is a list of restore points, but the process always
ends in failure due to an "Unspecified Error". This is the first time I have
tried to use it, so I guess it is possible that it never did work.

My question is this;
Is there a way to repair system restore without losing 3 months work,
which is what would happen by doing a system recovery?

Any hints would be really appreciated.

the system restore points work as a chain... and if one or more are corrupt
then they all go bad..

So what happened is that one restore point went bad and all of them dont
work now..

System restore as a service is running.. it is the restore points that are
messed up .. THERFORE:

Do a disk cleanup and there is an option there somewhere to delete all but
most recent restore points.

That will purge all the old ones and the new ones that will be created will
be ok

Is there anything else you need except that?

Let's see if System Restore will function in Safe Mode.

Boot into Safe Mode and perform a test restore using the following link.

Dont tell me you also like vista because if you do.. then remind me to throw
some insults.
If you dont like vista, then bravo for trying to help..but I doubt you are.

The restore points are broken... wake up! They do get corrupt sometimes...
but vista itself is corrupt out of the box.. what do you expect?

Thanks for the help.
Per your advice, I found that restore worked just fine in safe mode, so I
took the next step and disabled resource protection in NIS 2007 and restore
worked as it should. I ran into one problem though. The restore apparently
changed something in Norton, because after the restore norton would no longer
load. It had to do with missing runtime DLL's. I did install an update to
Java prior to the problem and I suspect it had something to do with it. At
any rate, I reversed the restore, and all is well again, at least for the
moment.

Do you have any idea on what you just said to the OP. Unbelievable. I suggest that you get a bit more experience with the way computers work and I am not talking about Vista but in general.

You may want to reinstall NIS, but I would suggest uninstalling and finding
another AV application.
