Restore Vista backup to an XP notebook

My vista machine is in repair. Is there anyway to restore the vist
backup to another laptop I use that runs XP?:cry

No, sorry. This is exactly why I hate backup programs that put the backup
into a proprietary format.

But doesn't the Vista backup program use the .vhd format? That's a widely
used format that can be opened by most vitual machine programs, as a virtual
disk drive. You can also mount it using vhdmount.exe.
