Restoring deleted Junction Points

hi

i just got vista and was setting up permissions and got very confused by the
inability to access the documents and settings folder. I eventually figured
this out, but in the process i deleted some of these junction points. is
there a way to bring these back, and is it necessary??

If you delete a junction point using Windows Explorer or a del /s command,
this will affect the target directory and all subdirectories. Deleting a
junction point using Explorer is not safe, because it will delete the
targeted files immediately as if using shift-delete. If you drag the
junction to the recycle bin, the targeted files will look safe, but will be
deleted when the recycle bin is emptied.

This all sounds kind of messy. I think I would create a new account, and
start over.

you know... i was thinking about this and i came up with the same idea. i
just created a new user and copied over the the files using the public
folder. Then i poked around in the old user and i looked in the recycle and
there the junctions were! so i restored them and all seems OK. You need to
have visibility of all files turned on (hidden, system) in order to see
these babies in the recycle.

Anyway, i am going to use the new user i set up, but i am going to watch and
see what happens to the old user. Overall, Vista is interesting..but odd!!

Glad to hear things are sorted out. It's good that you hadn't emptied the
Bin. For example, permanently deleting the My Music junction in the Recycle
Bin would have deleted your Music folder and its contents, and the Music
folder and its contents would not have gone into the Recycle Bin.

Yes, Vista has some elements like Junction Points and Symbolic Links that
can be kind of puzzling. Basically they are "re-directories", that tell
programs where the new locations for folders are in Vista, as well as what
the new names are.

The computer I'm fixing has many of the junction points for backwards
compatibility with XP "damaged" (gone, altered permissions, ...). There's no
chance of using system restore or undelete from recycle bin - it's well past
that.

Is there a way to reset/rebuild/reinstate them all to the Out-Of-The-Box
state?

Easiest thing to do is make a new user account.

OK, but isn't it possible (probable in my case?) that Default is messed up,
so the n account will be too? I'm still wondering whether there is a way to
'repair' (from first principles).

If you have altered the junction points in one account, there is no way you
can have changed any 'defaults' as such.

In any case, there is no harm in trying to make another account. You can
always delete the account with NET USER <username> /DELETE, and get rid of
the profile with DELPROF, or even just deleting the folder, if it doesn't
work (unlikely).

If it does work, you can then delete your original account, and then make
another one with the same username. Obviously, move your files beforehand.
