Hi

I have win vista ultimate sp1.

Almost all of my icons have been replaced by old icon; How can I restore
my icons to their defaults- all icons, drive icons, folder icons, file
icons?

Plz help me in their restoration.

Hi--

Can you give me specific examples of what icons looked like before they
changed and what the replacement looks like? It's too fuzzy too understand.

Thanks,

CH

Dear,

Just right click on any folder->properties->customize->change icon-> the
very first icon that you now see- the color less white icon with some
blobs in the middle- that is what all of my drive, folder, file icons have
changed to; Now I want to restore all my drive, folder, file icons to
their pretty color icons.

Thankx,

oc9ine.

oc9ine--

I believe what you are talking about is that they have all changed to look
like the first icon in the default system 32 folder when you go to the
change icons dialouge. I'm familiar with that because I collect favicons
which I store in a favicons folder on my data partitions, and I have about
1000 icons I've collected, plus the 1000 plus intrinsic or native to Vista,
plus the icons available from the program file folders of programs installed
(for example MSFT Office allows you access to hundreds of office icons from
there).

Somehow your icons have been corrupted (both system and shortcuts) to that
first one on the upper left that is default highlighted.

I've not seen that happen before or if I have, I don't remember seeing that
problem on the groups/forums. Have your tried a system restore to a restore
point prior to it happening?

You can also try an SFC by typing cmd in the search box above start>rt.
click cmd when it pops up>run as admin>at cmd prompt type sfc /scannow.

If those don't work, try doing a Startup Repair. I know the name and MSFT's
party line suggest it is to be used when you can't boot, but I've used it
many many many times to fix significant or systemic problems with a number
of components in Vista.

try 3 options from Startup Repair. If you have a Vista DVD then
restart with it in the drive>press any key to boot from it and run Startup
Repair. From Startup Repair you have 3 good tools with an excellent chance
of fixing your system. If you don't have a Vista DVD from which to boot to
Startup Repair, no problem, Download the .iso from the link below and
burn it, and you'll have the Microsoft Vista Repair Disk with Startup
Repair.

Download Vista Repair Disk

How to Use Startup Repair from the Vista DVD or the Repair Disk you make:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...f3f351033.mspx

2) ***If Startup Repair does not get your icons back to normal***, then use
the 3 bootrec
commands from the command prompt available on the Statup Repair Menu:

The menu I refer to is in this set of directions with a grey background.

http://vistahomepremium.windowsreins...airstartup.htm

Those are:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuild BCD

3) If my second option doesn't work, then try System restore from the
Startup Repair list.

4) If you have the Vista DVD, you can try a repair install ( in place
upgrade) of your vista installation to get the incons back:

Good luck,

CH

Go to C:\Users\*your name*\AppData\Local and delete the iconcache.

Reboot! The icon cache will be rebuilt.

Doing this may solve your problem. It has worked for me on numerous
occasions.
