Restoring from System State vs reinstall drivers

Hello,
I just finished installing SP2 update to my Win XP Pro setup, and was
wondering if (and should) I restore the System State from backup, does that
preclude the necessity of reinstalling the drivers? Is this a good move?
Thanks, God bless
Van

Why ? If SP2 installed correctly, then just what are you trying to
accomplish ?

Drivers need to be reinstalled I understand. And I'm not sure what
configurations may have been stored in the System State backup that I need to
restore so are not lost.
Thanks,Van

Van,

If this is an OEM system [ Dell, HP, etc ] then there should be a driver
CD included. IF not, strongly suggest you visit the manufacturer's site
and download the most current drivers [ or the ones that functioned
successfully ].

Third-party device drivers are not restored after you restore the System
State data from backup in Windows XP

MowGreen,
I haven't done this before, but yes my desktop is a Dell and I have the
drivers CD-but would it not be best to load to latest drivers from the
internet? Or would it matter that much.
Thanks again,
Van

MowGreen,
Another followup question: I read the MS KB article870891 you referred me
to. It brings up other questions: How do I determine if a driver is needed?
Do I just try each device? Or per the article if it is in the Device Manager,
do I need to uninstall and reinstall each device as stated or only those that
don't work?
Thanks again for your help, God bless

Device Manager will clearly show any device that needs a driver with a
yellow question mark, Van.

If the system isn't that old then I'd suggest using the driver CD that
Dell provides. By 'that old', I mean a year or two.
When you open Device Manager, double click any device that has a yellow
question mark. Is there a 'Reinstall driver' button available ?
If Yes, then click it and leave the next page that pops up marked as it
should be with the first option chosen and then click Next.
At this point you *may* or may not need to insert the CD.

Folks get into trouble updating hardware drivers because they are under
the impression that performance can be 'miraculously' improved.
In reality, newer drivers are issued to correct problems with using the
device.
The best way to improve performance is to upgrade the actual hardware
itself, not just the driver for it.
