Hello TheWall,

The reverse lookup zone uses the ip range instead of the zone name. 196.26.x.x

Best regards

In the context of mail delivery, you're supposed to point it to the
valid public name used by your SMTP server.

The SMTP Server should use a valid Public Name for outbound SMTP. e.g.
mail.domain.com. Where this is set depends on the mail system, it looks
like Exchange 2007, if that is the case it's set in the Properties for
the Send Connector.

The Public DNS Name for mail server, e.g. mail.domain.com, points to the
public IP Address used by the mail server.

The Public IP Address used by the mail server should have a PTR Record
in a Reverse Lookup Zone pointing back to the public name.

With regards to SMTP you *must* use the public name (.com). But you need
to establish what that is, or make one up first.

From the looks of it, the receiving mail server is doing a check for a
reverse (PTR) entry for your MX record, and one doesn't exist.

You will need to contact your ISP to create a reverse entry for your mail
server. Internally, you will not have control of the external public IP,
since it belongs to your ISP. Call them and ask them to create a PTR entry
called mail.yourdomainname.com (or whatever the public record is), and tell
them you want the PTR associated with 196.26.x.x.

I would also suggest to change the record that shows up in an SMTP telnet
response. Currently it's showing as Server.domain.local, but you want it to
show as mail.yourExternalDomainName.com, (or whatever it's called). In
Exchange 2003, that's done in the ESM, under the Server object, Protocols,
SMTP VS, right-click properties, Deliver Tab, Advanced. Type the name in
there.

If Exchange 2007, it's done in EMC, Server Config, Hub, Transport tab,
Default, properties, as well as in Org, Hub, Transport, internet connector's
properties that you created.

Hi, the PTR pointers are now pointing to servername.domain.com.

Still got the error msg. It was done yesterday.

I am on Exchange 2007. Cant find the Connector Connector properties under
Server Config but the internet connectors under Organisation Config there are
2 send connectors. The one i cant change. The source server for it is our old
Exchange 2003 server. Can i delete that connector?

The Send connector for the new server points to servername.domain.com. (Same
as the ptr record)

Sorry, I should have been more specific - under the Server Config section,
click on Hub Transport, then properties of the Default connector.

The source server is 2003? If you want the source to be your 2007, you'll
want definitely want to change it to the 2007 server (the connector in the
Org\Hub Transport\Send Connector, your default send connector properties,
Source server.

If you are still getting the message, it could have been from a message that
was sent prior to you changing it. Remember, delivery sending warning is set
at 4 hours, and the message expires in 2 days.
