reversed SP2 update, now 1.5 Gb of HD space missing

Windows Update prompted me to download and install SP2.
After doing so, and restarting the computer, my desktop was
completely screwed up -- the taskbar was missing, icons had
been lost, performance was bad. I therefore used System
Restore to go back to the pre-SP2 config. This worked, but
now instead of approximately 4.7 GB of HD space, I have
only 3.11 GB. System Restore did indicate that it had to
rename some folders in order to save the files. What can I
do to get this HD space back?

Running XP Home SP1, Compaq Presario, 640 Mb RAM

I forgot to add: there is no uninstall for SP2 listed in
Add/Remove Programs, nor is spuninst.exe listed in the
uninstall information directory $NtServicePackUninstall$.
I went to
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\9ded4ee34 a35fced0033d3e152a36e0e\
and clicked on spuninst.exe there, but it prompts me to
remove windows (!), so I aborted.

Problem: the 9ded4ee34a35fced0033d3e152a36e0e directory
contains only 382 MB of data. The $NtServicePackUninstall$
directory contains only 36 MB of data. What about the
other 1.2 _GIGA_bytes?

Also, should I run spuninst.exe?

That is the uninstall file.
If it is in the service pack file, it should uninstall SP-2.
However it may or may not work since you restored the computer.
If uninstalling SP-2 was desired, the uninstall should have been tried
before System Restore.

Hi

1)
Clean out this folder (WU5's temporary download folder) to get rid
of the SP2 temporary installation files

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

2)
Stop and start System Restore to possibly regain some space (but you
will lose your current Restore points), and maybe reduce the limit on
how much disk space SR is allowed to use (I usually set it between
640 MB to 1 GB).
