Title says it all. How can I rid the constant annoying popup in Outlook
Express wanting to free up disk space and compact messages. This is a little
ridiculous in the era of huge hard drives.

You can't and it has nothing to do with how much space is on your hard
drive at all. If you don't do it, sooner or later you will lose all your
messages. I trust you have a back up, being as you have plenty of space
to put a back up. To make matters worse, if OE is compacting messages
and the power goes out or someone hits the reboot button on your
computer case, bye, bye messages.

So, when it appears, let it do its thing and don't touch your mouse or
keyboard until it's done. If you've never done it and if you have a lot
of messages, it may take a long time. Be patient. Don't have any other
programs open when you're compacting.

To never see the message again, download OE Tool, free, which will set
the counter back to zero every time you use OE Tool to compact. You see,
that compact window will appear every 100 times that you close OE.

Outlook Express is wanting to compact the DATABASE it uses to store your
email.

It is ridding itself of the empty areas left in the database when you
move/delete email from one location to another.

It is not just a space concern - but a performance concern. Do it every so
often - it doesn't take long and if you do it when you are about to leave
for lunch/go to bed/whatever - you'll never know.. Not to mention you might
notice a performance increase the next time you use the application.

I have always kept messages in my inbox but recently when the automatic
compacting began, I lost all but a few messages of more than 3 months ago.
This is disastrous. The injuction of not storing things in the inbox is new
to me and should be more widely publicized.

As a separate item, how do I get the eliminated messages back?
