Right-click item in Start Menu = Explorer crash

Hi all,
Been using Ultimate for a while and other than the slow(er than XP)
boot, it seems fine.

One little annoyance is when I right-click some shortcuts within the
start menu (start/all programs/xx) it crashes explorer. E.g., if I
want to delete an item directly from the start menu by right-
click/delete.

Happened when I first installed Vista and is happening again with a
clean install.

It doesn't happen with all items - only with direct shortcut links to
the executable. E.g., a folder may have a shortcut link to a help
file, a licence file, and the exe. It's only the latter that will
result in a crash via right-click.

I've tried mucking about with security settings for start menu items
and it makes no difference.

I can go in via explorer to C:\Users\xxxx\Start Menu\xxxx and right-
click the same shortcut and delete the menu item without an issue.
Only happens via Vista Start Menu button.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Mick

its probably some windows explorer extension that is creating the problem..

to resolve this download http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

(scroll to bottom for download)

then run the exe as administrator by right clicking it,
then find all the non microsoft extensions (that are usually highlighted in
pink)
and disable them temporarily.. see if this fixes the issue..

then if you want you can turn them on -one by one doing restarts after each
change
(or at least a log off- log on so explorer will be reloaded) to find the
culprit with trial and error.

I would be interested to find out which one was causing you problems or if
it was this at all...

so post back with your findings...

Hi,
Thanks for that you've fixed it! It was CFI Shelltoys that was
causing the problem. Updated to latest version and problem fixed.

When I did the clean install a couple of months back I meant to check
after each program was installed but forgot about the problem until
recently. That little program you put me on to is great.

Thanks again,

Mick
