Right side of screen goes blank (white)

On start up about 10cm on the right side of my screen goes blank.

If I click on it it dissapears and then the gadget bar and the rest of
the screen is fine.

About the only thing done to this new laptop was I tried installing
Office 2003 without uninstalling the trial version of 2007. I have
since removed both versions and loaded Office 2007.

Has anyone else seen this problem or have any suggestions of what I
could try to find the source of the blank screen?

Updated your video card drivers lately? Any messages in Problem Reports and
Solutions (View History)?

Sounds like your sidebar may be malfunctioning. To check (when the white bar
shows up) go into the processes tab of Task Manager (right click on the Task
Bar to open Task Manager) and see if sidebar.exe is running. If it is, right
click on it and select "End Process" - that should remove the white bar.

If this "fixes" the problem - then you're going to need to repair the
sidebar or Vista to eliminate this issue.
