Roaming Profile Size

good afternoon. Here I have a domain with win2k and some workstations, all
windows xp... All users have roaming profile. I want to limit the profile
size, via GPO limits only to 30mb. I need at least 60mb and up to 100mb for
everyone. There are profiles here with almost 400mb, and they are too slow
to logon or logoff....
All profiles are stored together in a single hard disk, with a single
partition and with a single share called "profiles". There are a lot of of
folders in this share, one for each user login name.
I`m thinking to add quotes to users, that will deny more than 100mb to this
drive, so they must delete something to make they profiles smaller. Will it
work well?

I think the first thing you need to do is see why the profiles are so large.
You may want to exclude directories from being copied to the roaming profile
when the user logs off. We have an application that stores some cached files
in a directory under each user's profiles. Since there's not real advantage
(other than possibly a second or two required for logging into the
application), I've excluded that directory from being stored with the
roaming profile.

Another thing is to consider redirecting the "My Documents" folder to
another location (like the user's home drive).

I'd do this before limiting the size of the profile. If you decide to do it,
be sure you know the impact on the user if it is exceeded....

They are big for some things:

1 - ACDSEE software make thumbnails that are big
2 - Temporary internet files, cookies folders are big
3- people save mp3 into their documments

I believe I replied to this identical post in another group (to the effect
that you're going about this the wrong way - use folder redirection, etc).
Please don't multipost - if you need to post to multiple groups, it's best
to crosspost instead, by posting a single message to a handful of relevant
groups (separate the NG names with commas) so that everyone can follow the
thread. Thanks :-)

Temporary Internet Files are automatically excluded from the Roaming
Profile....
You may want to consider as Hank said to redirect My Documents to a network
location so that it is not part of the roaming profile

But, if you really just want to increase the 30MB limit in the GPO it can be
done.
Go to C:\windows\inf
Open system.adm in notepad
Search the document for MaxProfileSize
A few lines under MaxProfileSize you will see: Max 30000
Change the 30000 value to whatever you want the max to be and save the file
be sure not to edit any formatting in this file or it will become corrupted.
Edit the GPO which applies to the clients and currently has a max profile
size of 30MB
Right click administrative templates
Click Add/Remote Templates
Remove the system template and then readd it from C:\windows\inf

You should now be able to increase the profile limit to whatever you
configured in the template file.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

We have lots of roaming profiles and they changes so fat. Is there a way to see the profile sizes of all the roaming profiles? For example a tool, script vs?

Thanks for kind reply.
