I was suffering error 0x80072EE2 when trying to do updates. To my great
surprise the MTU turned out to be the answer!
In theory it should have made no difference with my fast link, but there
must be a bottleneck on the Internet somewhere (or bandwidth throttling) that
means that longer packet lengths are more prone to getting dropped due to
collisions etc. Such packet collisions would cause TCP/IP to try longer and
longer delays before resending, and eventually being so long that the session
times out (that's what the error means).
New MTU value: 1458
The 1458 value is actually recommended as the optimum value in the UK by
British Telecom (the telephone network provider in the UK), and although some
ISP's advise experimentation to see if greater throughput can be achieved, I
have personally found 1458 to both about the best and most consistent.
I use the Netgear DG834 and D-Link DI-604 and both perform well with this
setting, and what's more important, they both allow Windows Update to proceed
without errors!
The Netgear DG834 seems to default to 1458. Check it in the WAN Setup menu.
The D-Link DI-604 however defaults to 1500! To change that, click the Home
tab then select the WAN menu item and change it there.
Hopefully this will be helpfull to someone.
