Router+WinUpdate=Failure?

Hi,

I have a mysterious problem with updating Windows XP SP2. I go to the
Windows Update site, click either Express or Custom, and after a couple
of minutes, I get a 0x80072ee2 error. The weird thing is, it only
happens if I'm connecting through my Netgear MR814 router. If I connect
directly to the DSL modem, it works fine. Also, if I connect with a
different PC through the same router, it works fine.

I've scoured the newsgroups and found many suggestions. I've tried
many, including changing the router's MTU from 1500 to 1492 or 1400.
Still no joy.

There seems to be some bad interaction between one PC and the router,
but not my other PC and the router. Any ideas what it could be?

The Windows Update log follows.

Thanks,
Bob Alexander

When accessing the Update site, you receive the 0x80072EE2 or 0x80072EFD error.

Finding a solution for the 0x80072EE2 error
http://www.updatexp.com/0x80072ee2.html

You receive an "Error 0x80072EE2" error message, an "Error 0x80072EFD" error message,
or an "Error 0x80072f76" error message if you try to use the Microsoft Windows Update
Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you receive the 0x8024502d
error.

Check your MTU setting:
Cable/Dialup - 1500
DSL PPPoE - 1492
AOL - 1400-1460

Download TCP Optimizer to set it.

or direct download:

Thanks. Most of these things I had already tried - except for
TCPOptimizer. When I ran its Largest MTU test, I got fragmentation at
1476 bytes and Request Timed Out at 1465 bytes. Hmmm... timeouts could
explain this, especially since I'm also having problems with Quicken
downloads, and it's complaining of timeouts.

So I tried lowering the MTU from 1500 to 1450, then 1420. Neither
worked. Any thoughts on what could be causing those timeouts?

Thanks,
Bob
