Ok, I found the run command window. When I enter something i wish to run, a
window opens briefly, then disappears before I can see what is in it.

What do I need to to do so it persists until I want to close it

Try following:
Start | type cmd.exe | in the "Programs" list directly above, right click on Cmd.exe | choose "Run as Administrator"

Labii,
Try following:
Start | type cmd.exe | in "Programs" list above, Right-click on Cmd.exe | choose "Run as Administrator"
