I found this on the web

SARAH'S WINDOWS TWEAK: CREATE CUSTOM APP PATH
written by Sarah Lane on Thursday, March 11, 2004
Use a custom name to launch applications from the Run command

I love shortcuts -- desktop shortcuts, shutdown shortcuts, and most o
all, Run dialog shortcuts. They let me become more familiar with the wa
Windows runs, I rely less on desktop icons, and I learn about m
executables. I also like typing things like "dogpoo.exe" in the Ru
command to launch Outlook Express. Rather immature, but hey, look wher
I work. On tonight's "Screen Savers" I'll show you how to creat
application paths (funny or useful) in your Registry to match specifi
Run commands.

*Don't say we didn't warn you*
Since changes to the Registry are permanent, '_back_your_Registry_up_
(http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=kb;TR;322756) before yo
make any changes in case you need to restore it later.

*Create your custom path*

- Run RegEdit. Navigate to the following key
HKey\LocalMachine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\App Path
- Right-click the App Paths folder, click New, and click Key t
create a new key within your App Paths folder. Name it whatever yo
want, but remember to include the .exe at the end of your chose
command (I can't find a way around it yet). For example
HKey\LocalMachine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Ap
Paths\dogpoo.ex
- Create a new string in the Key folder you just created, in thi
case dogpoo.exe. Right-click the folder, click New, and select Strin
value. Name it Path and modify the value to point to the Progra
folder holding your chosen executable (do not include the executabl
itself, just the folder in which it resides). For example, if yo
wanted to launch Outlook Express, navigate to
C:\Program Files\Outlook Expres
- A default string will appear above the path string in your Ke
folder. Modify its value to point to the executable you want to run
Using our Outlook Express example, you'd point to
C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.ex

Now when you launch the run command and type in "dogpoo" (withou
quotation marks or the .exe file extension), you'll launch Outloo
Express. Obviously my example is pretty silly, but you can use thi
tweak seriously to launch your favorite apps with names that are eas
for you to remember.

Have fun my fellow tweakers and tweakerettes

Let's see, you messed around with the registry on Vista following 5-year-old
instructions for a completely different operating system. I loved The
ScreenSavers show when it was on TechTV but both the show and the channel
have been gone for a very long time.

You solve this by searching for solutions to what you want to do for the
operating system you are running. Reading through the "tip", I don't get
the point of this anyway. Why not just use a shortcut to your game? It is
more efficient, works, and you don't need to take the chance of breaking
your registry.

true, but I've never killed my register and wont. I'm not messing around
in important keys...

The point is, I need to run that exe properly but vista seems to search
the recuired dll's in the wrong directory. I cant find anything about
how to solve this.

So the question is: how can I let windows detect the right folder to
search the dll's.

By the way, I used this method on more apps. Works great. So I don't
see the point of you mentioning the article was old and for an old OS.

Since you are more experienced than your first post lead me to believe, I'm
sure you'll figure it out.

EOT for me.

if i could solve it myself i would not be posting this in the first
place... no hard feelings though...

Problem is caused by the game itself, it doesn't work properly if
excutted with shortcuts in weird folders also...

When i put it's files in %USERPROFILE% it works great, but i dont whant
that files there... is there a way to create junctions for this?

i solved this one... I read that in the apppath keys, windows does not
look for dll's in the specefied folders. I created a .lnk file to my
app, in the same folder as my app en pointed the apppath to that
sortcut. So wen I use it as runcommand windows will activate the link
and the link wil search for the dll's in the right folder. EOT
