Running 32 App on SBS 2008?

Hi, I have client with a 32 bit app running on an old SBS 2000 box (it
manages property details, pictures, floor plans etc) and they need a new
server now.

I don't manage the product myself but the support company that do tried
and failed to get it to work on SBS 2008 and now tell me to get SBS
2003(!) which Im not going to do.

I have got back to them to try and make them see sense as everything is
heading 64 bit and they will have to update (it is a current product but
they seemed totally unaware that SBS is only 64 bit now).

Meanwhile is there an easy way to get a 32 bit app to run on SBS 2008 in
some compatible emulated environment or other? Otherwise the server
upgrade plan will stall until they recompile for 64 bit.

Thx.

Hi Otto:

This is probably a budget issue, and not a real problem. SBS 2000 only came
in a version that included ISA server. For about the same money as that
original purchase you can buy SBS 2008 Premium, which includes a second
license to Server 2008, either 32 or 64 bit.

For about the same money you could (presumably) install SBS 2008 Standard on
new hardware, and format the old box with Server 2003 or even 2000 if you
can find it. And if that is all that the LOB vendor will support you should
be looking to make this work until they catch up. We are in the solutions
business, and if you don't find a solution to this, someone else will.

There are several ways to deploy the above mix of products. If you have
more questions about deployment, please come back here.

You could purchase SBS 2008 Premium and then re-purpose the old SBS 2000 as
a second server ( windows server 2008 32-bit/64-bit license included with
SBS 2008 Premium). Then run the 32-bit app until the vendor updates it with
64-bit compatibility.

Most 32-bit applications will run just fine on Windows x64.

There are a number of exceptions - anything that installs a driver (the
driver aspect needs to be 64-bit), and any application that still has
16-bit components (esp. installers).

It would be interesting to know what the vendor is claiming is preventing
their application from running on SBS2008.

You might also consider downloading the trial edition of SBS2008, and
seeing if you can deploy the application yourself (they might simply be
attempting to fob you off).

I like Steve Foster's advice--try it.

I had two line of business sort of apps that I used to run on the SBS2003
server before the upgrade. One is a credit card clearing application used
by a Unix server. The support folks for it said they wouldn't support it,
so I ended up moving it to an XP workstation. This has worked OK, but I
really would rather have it on the server still.

The other was an app that administers our phone system--an Inter-tel 5000
series that does VOIP among other things. I've now installed that on the
server--didn't bother to ask support! and after some compatibility setting
tweaks it works fine.

Depends on the nature of the app, how crucial it is to daily operations, and
how important vendor support is, I think.

Hi, thanks for replys.

I should have said that the support have tried to get it going on 64 BIT
boxes and failed. They tried again on 2008 (having not ever tried
before) at my clients site and admitted failure.

I had the site manager ring the support management in the end and remind
them of their responsibilities and things appear to be moving now.

If they dont get it done soonish I'll probably leave as suggested on the
current server for a while and use 2008 for everything else and phase it
out when its updated.
