I was running a game.........

I was running a game when suddenly the screen froze for a moment then the
desktop aoppeared. Why did that happen?

Open the Event Viewer to read the error, and the filename that caused it.
it's probably the game using the video in a way the video driver can't do.

What services must be running for event viewer to work?
