Hi, I curently us MS Office 97 on an XP computer which needs relacing. The
'97 version is an upgrade from '95 so to install it on a new computer I need
to load '95 then upgrade to '97.
I dont want the expense of buying a new version of Office - the current one
does all I need. If I buy a new machine with Vista will it accept my '95
version ?

Here is a link to a document released by Microsoft about what versions of
Office are supported on Vista:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/932087

You'll notice Office 97 is absent, but of course most users are running
programs not officially supported by Vista. I have seen numerous postings in
newsgroups and forums about users having problems running Office 97 on
Vista. If you decide to try it, you wont have to install Office 95 first.
You can go right to the Office 97 install. you'll just need to have the
Office 95 disk available when Office 97 asks for the location of an
upgradable product.

You need to remember your using a product that is over 10 years old and way
past its end of life cycle. Your best choice is to get a copy of Office 2003
or 2007 for Students and Teachers as long as you don't need Access or
Outlook. Its only around $140 in most major stores and can be purchased for
less than that from reputable sellers on line.

How about a free download of OpenOffice.org? It will read and write all
the proprietary MS formats and WP proprietary formats plus 'standad'
formats. It should do everything you need and more.

It mostly works. I have updated and printed documents and spreadsheets.

You need to activate Vista to get some file to make the help work.

There maybe problems with Macros and Visual Basic in Excel.

I just may get an OEM Office 2007 - but the idea annoys me, I don't want
to reward MS for introducing the incompatibility.

Unless you purchase a full OEM license for XP, install it in a virtual
machine (Virtual PC 2007 is a free download) then load Office 97.
