Running Windows Update

Do I need to be logged in as the Administrator to run scheduled tasks? I am
the only user of my home pc. Hence I am the Administrator and when I switch
on the pc I am automatically logged on as Administrator.

With installed programs such as Windows or Norton Anti-Virus, do I have to
manually add them to a scheduled task list or are they automatically added as
Live Updates?

I have been having problems in that neither Windows or Norton Anti-Virus
seem to be automatically updating.

In my scheduled tasks I have added Windows and LiveUpdate (Norton). Ideally
I would just like them to run every time I am logged onto the Internet – I
typically only log on to the Internet for about 15 minutes at a time (to
send/ receive emails).

The Task Scheduler asks for “start time” (I put 06:45 as I’m often online at
that time) every day. They have “never” run.

What I am trying to find out is how to get such programs to automatically go
and look for updates every time I go online. Any ideas please?

There is no need to add anything for Windows Update to Scheduled Tasks (what
did you add, anyway?)

There is also no need to add LiveUpdate to Scheduled Tasks - Live Update
looks after itself.

You might be adding confusion by trying to add things to Scheduled Tasks.

Hi Robin. I am getting confused between XP "Services" and "Scheduled tasks".

I am having problems getting Windows/Norton/etc live updates to run
automatically - hence I have been trying to manually add them!

I can't find them in "Services" so I tried adding
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\wupdmgr.exe" and
"C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUALL.EXE" respectively to get live updates.

I was expecting both Windows and Norton to update automatically after they
were initially installed, but this is not happening. Norton thinks it may be
a "corrupted user account" issue (not sure why!).

I logon as an administrator always (I am only user of the pc) - the default
administrator is then hidden.

Would appreciate any guidance you can give.

p.s. I have noted your comment re. confusion - I will remove the two .exe
files from the task scheduler and await your comments on my previous message
(please...)

What settings do you have in control panel "System", tab "Automatic
Updates"?

What happens if you send Internet Explorer to Windows Updates?

Robin - thanks for your persistence (and patience)...

I have:

"Automatically download updates for my computer
Every day
at 07:00"

Please note that I am not always online at 07:00. I do not have ADSL. I
typically logon to Internet then send/ receive/ disconnect through Outlook
Express. Sometimes I am only logged on for about 15 minutes. Sometimes it's
all over before 07:00 and sometimes it's after 07:00.

Does this affect the automatic update scheduling?

Ideally, I want Windows/ Norton/ etc to go looking for updates the moment
they know I've gone online. I thought that these programs "detected" online
status.

When you ask "What happens if you send Internet Explorer to Windows
Updates?" - if I go online and ask for Windows (or Norton) updates (there are
often fresh ones there) it goes and gets them and installs them without a
problem - it's getting the pc to go and do it itself...

Thanks for any thoughts. N

Windows automatic updates will only try to download updates when it detects
that your internet connection is idle, so that it does not interfere with
your work. Maybe you are online for such short periods that it never finds
a suitable time.

It ought to run a check every time you go online, to see what is waiting,
but any downloads scheduled would tend to wait for periods when the
connection is idle or very lightly loaded.

It's a pity that there isn't a user interface for getting Automatic Updates
to "try now".

In Tools, that Dial-a-fix gizmo has "Process Idle Tasks," using the command:

rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

I think there is: Run... wuauclt.exe /detectnow

One thing I'm not clear about using it is whether we should be
terminating any already active wuauclt.exe
