Running WU from Firefox?

A couple of times in the months since I switched to Firefox I've used
Windows Update. But when I ran it today from my XP Home desktop, FF
loaded a window saying: "You need to be running a version of Internet
Explorer 5 or higher in order to use Windows Update."

But I have MSIE6 installed, so I don't follow that. I tried running
MSIE6 first, before WU, but FF still loaded. I'm darned if I can
remember precisely how I succeeded before, but I know I did!

Of course, I can go to the Windows Download Centre, but I'd much
prefer to retain the convenience of the automatic process. Can someone
straighten me out on this please?

OK, realised the answer a few minutes later. I just open MSIE6 and
then visit the WU site. Clearly I need to remove that desktop
shortcut!

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp because when I
run that *directly*, rather than first loading MSIE6 and entering it
in its URL box, I get FF loading and giving that message I described.
