RWW Issue with SBS2008

Windows XP SP3 client

Remoting from a Windows 7 Pro client


When I try and start an RWW session via \remote after I log into the server
and "Connect to a Computer" I get an error message when connecting to the
Windows XP pro client at the office. The message states "The wizard cannot
configure Remote Desktop Connection settings. Make sure the the client
version of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 6.0 or later is installed on
this computer."

Now I have another completely separate SBS2008 server (separate location)
also with XP Pro clients that I can successfully remote into so it doesn't
make sense that it's my Windows 7 computer that I have remotely. I am
thinking it's the SBS2008 server (at location 1) that may be missing
something.

What am I missing?

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your post.

Please make you have the latest RDP client 6.1 and later updates installed on the Windows XP workstation.

Remote Desktop Connection (Terminal Services Client 6.1) for Windows XP (KB952155)

If the issue persists after you upgrade to the latest RDP client, reset the Internet Explorer Settings , then re-register DLL file "Regsvr32 Mstscax.dll" which is located in %Windir%
\system32 folder. Close all open all instances of IE window and then test the issue again.

1. Click Start, please type "inetcpl.cpl" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and press Enter to open the Internet options window.
2. Switch to the Advanced tab.
3. Click the Reset Internet Explorer Settings button.
4. Click Reset to confirm the operation.
5. Click Close when the resetting process finished.
6. Uncheck Enable third-party browser extensions option in the Settings box. Click Apply, click OK.
7. Close all open all instances of IE window and then test the issue again.

That did NOT fix the problem. I had the user run both links and the update
but no go.

What else can I do? How can I tell which current version of the RDC client
is running on the XP Pro client? They are all running SP3.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your response. I understand you have applied both of the two updates and issue still exists.

The update 969085 if just for Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to enables the new Remote Desktop Services features that are introduced in Windows 7 and in Windows Server
2008 R2 on a computer that is running Windows XP SP3. That's why I would like you install it.

At this point, I would like to confirm with you that can you choose and connect to the SBS server instead of the Windows XP client? Do you get the same error message?

If the issue occurs to both SBS server and Windows XP clients, please try to reset the IE settings and register the "Mstscax.dll" dll file as we discussed. If you haven't tried, please
perform the steps below:

click "About" . On the bottom of the About window, you'll see the version such as "Remote Desktop Protocol 6.1 supported."

I tried to connect to the SBS2008 server and I get the same message. I'm
now believing that the issue is not with the XP client (or SBS 2008 server)
but something else such as a firewall. According to the Cisco firewall I
have ports 443, 3389 and 4125 open in addition to 25 and 987.

Any other thoughts.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your update.

Besides the firewall factor you mentioned, it is also necessary to troubleshoot the remote workstation web browser(IE) and RDP( 6.1 client or higher )installed on the remote
workstation. That's why I'd like you check and upgrade the RDP version and reset the IE settings and register the "Mstscax.dll" dll on that remote workstation.

Regarding other thoughts, here are some general information of RWW for your review reference:

Windows SBS 2008 sends all new users a "Welcome" e-mail that introduces them to the network features including Remote Web Workplace. Before users can access Remote
Web Workplace, network administrators must satisfy the following requirements:

" Users must be members of the Remote Web Workplace Users or the Domain Admins security groups.
" Windows SBS 2008 must allow connections through TCP ports 80, 443, 987, and 3389.
" The computer used to connect to Remote Web Workplace must allow connections through TCP ports 80, 443, 987, and 3389.
" Routers on Windows SBS 2008 must be configured to forward Internet traffic to TCP ports 80, 443, 987, and 3389. 443, 4125 are open on your Internet firewall.
" The browser used to view Remote Web Workplace must support and accept cookies. Otherwise, Remote Web Workplace refuses the connection.
" Clients are running Internet Explorer 6.0 SP2 or higher
" The RDP 6.1 client or higher is installed on the client machine
" The client must trust the SSL certificate that is installed on the SBS Web Applications site

RWW in SBS 2008 leverages the TSGateway service that is running on the SBS server to perform the remote desktop connection to the chosen machine. Like RWW,
TSGateway is fully enabled when the IAMW is completed ("Add a Trusted Certificate" must also be completed if you are using a 3rd party SSL certificate). This allows remote
desktop connections to your domain-joined machines through port 443. This is different from RWW in SBS 2003, where you had to open port 4125 through your firewall.
