Greetings! ... I have just installed a new HDD on a friend's computer (old
HDD crashed) and then did a complete reinstall of the OS - Win XP and
upgraded it to SP2. I also installed all the s/w and drivers as needed. Oh,
and Norton Internet Security Suite, too (with appropriate updates to the NAV
portion. And, last but not least, I went to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and
downloaded all the updates that were shown as Critical ... all on a DELL
desktop.

Immediately after this process, my friend told me that the start up was
v-e-r-y s-l-o-w ... I can say it did look a tad slow, and also report that I
had not ever used that system, her home system that she has been using for
over a year.

I have done searches for "slow computer" and "poor performance" on the
Internet and here in the Microsoft site. I find no direct 'fix' or exact
problem or symptoms with a single fix.

Anyone, ANYONE have an idea on what this could be caused by? (I've ruled out
"Operator Error" - hers, as the user, and mine, as the guy who installed the
drive and OS.

Thanks!
Tony

Tony;
It can take a few days for the prefetch to be rebuilt after installing a
Service Pack.
Do you have the latest drivers?
Is all your hardware compatible?
See if this helps:

Mr Jones ...

Thank you for your speedy reply. ... Let me respond to each of your points
individually:

> It can take a few days for the prefetch to be rebuilt after installing a Service Pack.

I have just spoken with the owner, a week after this reinstall, and the
speed is still slow. Were it better/back to "normal" she certainly would have
told me when we spokel. ??? How long should this rebuilding of the prefetch?
???

> Do you have the latest drivers?

I've read in other posts and on other sites that one should check for the
latest drivers for the h/w and mobo. ... I'm not versed on this practice. Do
you have a specific, step-by-step list of "How to" instructions for
performing these things? For example, how does one determine what mobo one
has onboard? How does one determine if one has the most current drivers for
attached h/w? (Disable a h/w piece and then re-enable it? What about a
pre-built DELL computer. How does one determine just what CD-RW/DVD Combo
drive is there? etc etc) ... and, question of all questions: Is it necessary
to uninstall SP2 before performing these driver updates?

> Is all your hardware compatible?

I'm assuming that, since this computer was purchased from DELL directly,
that all the h/w is compatible. No additions to the system have been made,
hardware-wise.

Again another assumption on my part: Installed OS onto new HDD; Installed
NIS/NAV and made a pre-connection to Internet computer scan w/o detecting
things. ... And, cannot recall off-hand if I ran Ad-aware or Spybot S&D
later, but did run a full scan of NAV (with all updates) before deeming the
reinstall OS & HDD complete. ... ergo, my assumption: the parasites and all
the other things listed at the top of that article are not a factor. ... but
then again, maybe something DID sneak in. ... but ... Geez! .........

I anxiously await your response, comments and advice.

Thanks again for your help here, Mr Jones.

The prefetch normally rebuilds by 3 days so that it not an issue a week
later.

Everest can help you identify the hardware and software installed:
http://www.lavalys.com/products/down...ng=en&pageid=3
Then check with the hardware manufacturer to see if there are any newer
drivers.
Since the computer is a Dell, check Dell:
http://support.dell.com/support/down...ex.aspx?~ck=mn
Hopefully you will not need to uninstall SP-2.

What I meant by compatible was compatible with SP-2.
Most if not all probably is, but a driver update may be necessary since
there may be issues with SP-2 and an older driver.

Depending on how the computer was originally set up and subsequently
maintained, will determine the possibility of malware.
There are often reports of computers becoming infected in the first seconds
after connection to the net without a firewall.
That checklist is pretty much an all inclusive checklist to eliminate the
possibility of problems.
It is particularly useful to those experiencing problems installing SP-2.

Be careful what you assume on a computer someone else is using, such
assumptions are unfortunately often incorrect because of lack of full
information on precise use of the computer.

And if you disable or even uninstall NIS/NAV?
