Since the April automatic download has stopped me saving Windows files, I
have gone back to an earlier restore point. When will it be safe to take the
April 06 download with the bugs fixed?

A guy named Maurice on this discussion steered me to a Microsoft support
article, which explains the problem you're having (and so was I). It seems
that the problem is with an odd interaction between the Windows Explorer
security update (MS06-015) and an HP program called "Share To Web". Check to
see if you have this HP program on your computer. In my case, I never used it
so I just uninstalled it, and it solved the problem completely. What the HP
program does is just provide a way to share photos or images on the web,
otherwise it does nothing functional on your computer and is unnecessary. I
would advise to keep the MS update and loose HP "Share To Web" - there are so
many other ways to share photos. Good luck! Thanks again Maurice!

Also check out MS support article: <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165>

To PJ: You are welcome.

To other readers: Security update 908531 has caused various Windows & Internet Explorer problems & the 911567 update has caused problems for many Outlook Express users.

If you use O.E., you may want to skip the 911567 update (until it's really fixed).

If you have update 908531, take a look at these articles:

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security update MS06-015 (article published 15 Apr-06)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

and http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-015.mspx which has been updated 4-15-2006

The first article was published Saturday, and the latter updated also.

The first article mentions Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software & Kerio personal firewall. If you have either, you're highly encouraged to read the articles.

If you have Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software, then do see & I'd suggest you apply Freudi's registry patch
http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads...are-To-Web.zip
Extract the ZIP file and afterwards double click the contained REG
file. Let it import into the registry.

I always wait about three weeks after publication date before installing, so
I'd go for it sometime in May. NEVER use automatic updates for anything!

Could you do me a favour and mail me the content of the
registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Shell Extensions

Export the key, ZIP the REG file and mail it to me, please. Thanks!

It will take some hours before I'll be able to look into the file
you'll send me, but I will do my best.

Bye,
Freudi

I also follow this procedure, especially after the Feb updates. I take
a screenshot of the current updates available, or copy their numbers
to text, and then wait a few weeks and compare numbers (if there have
been updates to the updates). I _never_ trust the initial updates
which is why I have "automatic" shut off.
