Same MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978) Problem

Auto update has been repeatedly trying to install this security update for
last 2 months. It downloads ok but fails on install. I get 'MSXML 4.0 not
installed' and detail gives Error Code 0x643. I have never had either
(KB927978) or (KB925672) installed or appear in the Installed Programs list.
All other patches and upgrades are up to date. I have no problem installing
them but I cannot install IE7 and a HP Photosmart network printer.
I've tried many possibilities with no luck! It appears that the registry
entries for MSXML4 are locked (corrupted). Administrative access does not
allow me to change or delete them. I've tried various solutions including
MowGreen's posted here with no luck.
I am over my head and frustrated! Can someone help?

To add to my earlier post, the IE7 install gives me the following message
"Could Not Open Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\MSXML2.FreeThr eadedDOMDocument.4.0\CLSID
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact you support
personnel'

Thanks for trying but I don't think you read my original post very well.
I said that I had tried the recommendations in MowGreen's post at that URL.
Neither KB927978 nor KB925672 were ever installed and do not appear in the
ADD/REMOVE programs list. (I did the 'Show Updates' check and 'display
hidden files') I also had manually downloaded the MSXML 4.0 SP2 KB927978 and
that didn't work.

Neither of the $NTUnintallKB... files exist in the windows folder. I am
lost, but it seems the fact that associated registries being locked or
corrupted and can't be changed or deleted with Admin access unlike other
registry entries must have something to do with it.

This may have nothing to do with your situation but I have frequently seen
pc's infected with with viruses, adware or spyware that would present with
multiple simultaneous software and hardware install issues (IE7, XP SP2,
printer or their drivers/software, video card or their drivers, etc.). Like
I said I may be off base but if you think this is a possibility there are
several good sites that offer free advice on detecting and removing this
gunk, major geeks and castle cops to name a few, look for the malware forums
and something like "start here" as an entry point.

Install it manually using the /verbose switch.
Then look for clues in the logs that creates.
Then, if you still need help, post the logs.

BTW if you noticed when I tried to help someone else with this symptom
it appeared that there was an HP service which was marking one of the files
being updated as "in-use". Stopping that service was suggested
but no clear indication was given by the poster whether that was done
or if new symptoms (e.g. different log messages) resulted from that change.

Good luck

BillB,

Open the registry editor from Start > Run > type in
regedit
Click OK

Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Msxml2.FreeThr eadedDOMDocument.4.0\CLSID

Right click CLSID and choose Permissions
BOTH Administrators and System must have Full Control and Read
permissions to get this update to install.

Redownload the update once more:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Close the browser and any other open programs
Now run msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe
If you are presented with the options of Repair, Remove, Modify, suggest
you choose Remove. Then if you are prompted to restart the system, do so.
If you are NOT presented with the 3 options it *should* install.
IF not prompted to restart, then run msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe once more
and it *should* install.
