This started the other day with my XP machine, Auto update keeps reminding me
that newer Defender signiture updates are available.
Here is a bit of my "update history"

What a Relief to find info on the exact same problem I've been experiencing
since March 8th. And to find it at Microsoft no less! This is so much
better than the Knowledgebase which takes forever and a day to attempt to
find anything!

I began experiencing problems with the Defender updates on Wed March 8, 2006
with the continual notification and "Empty - 0 kb" download of the following
Def. update 1.14.1314.1 - And on each successive update.

Thanks for providing the link that has info on removing the definition file
and beginning anew with the update process!!

Also thanks for the great Defender program!

Debbie

Ever since that, each successive Definition Update has resulted in the same
irritating problem

I have a similar problem, and, unlike bratpack, the answer doesn't help at all.

I just updated from Windows 95 to Windows ME on my 200MMX, 32MB RAM old
clunker, which continues to serve me well.

I appreciate the convenience of the new-for-me automatic update.

However, one of my security updates, KB828026, keeps repeating. I have
"successfully" installed it some six times now, yet every morning, I get the
little shield downloading it again and telling me to install it again.

It is I believe actually a security update for Windows Media Player 9, which
I got updated to in the overall update process. I also updated from IE 5.5 to
IE 6 SP 1 in the middle of this, if that is relevant.

Have I in fact successfully installed the update? If not, how do I? If so,
how do I get Windows Update to stop bugging me about it? And, am I eating up
hard disc space (in which my Model T is not terribly oversupplied with) with
six or more copies of this update, and if so, how do I find them and clean
them out?

I forgot to bring up something about the fix with the defintions.

You might want to mention that when a person runs the remove on the
definition file that they will receive a message asking: "Are you sure you
want to uninstall?"

It almost sounds like the Defender program will be uninstalled because it
doesn't specify "are you sure you want to uninstall the Definition File".

Just thought you might want to consider this since there are many people who
don't have much pc experience and this could prompt many questions due to the
lack of clarity.

Thanks again.

Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C},
Same problem with Defender update KB915597
Ran the Microsoft solution above and got an error message: This Installation
package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can
access it,or contact the application vendor so that this is a valid Windows
Installation Package. I have reinstalled Defender in case, but same message
persists.

This is obviously an ongoing issue KB915597 frequently appears in 'Updates
are ready for your computer' It seems there are many versions of this one
Latest noted is 1.71.129.0 but in latest definitions on Defender site there
is 1.71.135.0

What 'ongoing issue' are you referring to ? WD updates it's defs just
fine on all of my systems:

How to troubleshoot definition update issues for Windows Defender
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918355

NOTE: " If you are a home user who is experiencing this problem on your
personal computer, you can receive no-charge support by phone, chat, or
e-mail (http://www.microsoft.com/protect/support/default.mspx) . If you
are experiencing this problem on a network computer at work, read the
"Information for users on an enterprise network" section. "
