Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)
keeps coming up; Even immediately after I refresh Windows Update.
I'm running Win98SE.

I just had to reinstall my windows ME, and I have the same problem. I did all
my updates after the install and now when I check for updates, I am told I
need the cumulative security update for OE 6 SP 1 (KB837009). When I check
the installation history it shows the update as being successful. anyone have
any ideas????

"Mystic" and "Jem-Star"

Please open your registry and look in the following key. Here is the
procedure:

1.. Click Start
2.. Click Run
3.. Type: regedit
4.. Click OK ß This will open the registry editor
5.. In the registry editor, in the left hand panel, click the plus sign
before HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
6.. Click the plus sign in front of SOFTWARE
7.. Click the plus sign in front of Microsoft
8.. Click the plus sign in front of Windows
9.. Click the plus sign in front of CurrentVersion
10.. Click on the folder "Internet Settings" (NOTE: Do *not* click on the
plus sign here)
11.. In the right hand panel, find and double-click on MinorVersion ß
This will open a smaller "Edit String" window.
12.. In the Value data field, look through the entire text written there
for the following string: Q837009.
13.. Assuming you do NOT find that string, add that value onto the end of
the string by clicking in the Value data field and pressing the <End> key.
Verify that a semicolon follows the last entry made before you. Add the
following with all caps, then finish it with another semicolon;
14.. Click OK
15.. Close the Registry Editor
16.. Reboot the machine
17.. Go to Windows Update, and see if it offers the same update to you
once more.
Let us know how this goes.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

I did as instructed, but the update came back! As soon as I re-booted, the
icon was in the systray. It is programmed for automatic updates, so it is in
my installation history every day for the past couple of weeks.

Now what????

"mysticsun",

Ok, please reply back to this post with the output of the following:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. type: cmd <Enter>
4. When the Command Prompt opens, please copy and paste the following:
REG QUERY "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\In ternet Settings"
/v MinorVersion

The output should look something like this:
! REG.EXE VERSION 3.0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Internet
Settings
MinorVersion REG_SZ ;SP2;Q837009;

Please let us know what this is, and I'll have a look.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Hi Pat Walters MSFT:

I was having the exact same problem on my Win 98SE KXT 1000 laptop. In
my case I reinstalled Internet Exployer because I kept having error
messages come up that would shut down the brouser and restart it.

After the reinstallation, that problem seemed to go away (or it happen
much less frequent now) but the recurring Windows Update problem bagan
shortly thereafter.

I made the change to the registry that you suggested in your first
reply to this thread and so far the problem has dissappeared.

Thanks for posting your suggestion to the Microsoft.Public Newsgroup so
that others can benefit from your information.

Have a nice weekend.

Regards,

Hi Pat,
When I type cmd into Run, I get an error message: "Windows cannot find
'cmd'. You may have typed the name incorrectly in the Run dialog, or another
open program cannot find a system file. To search for a file, click the
Start button, then click Search".
Now What?

Pat, these folks are discussing a Win98/Me issue. There is no "CMD" in the
Win9x environment.

Additionally, while many Registry sections are the same, there are subtle
differences. Your posts obviously look like copy/paste solutions for WinXP
systems, not for Win9x ones. I don't think they will work as posted for any
9x system.

I respectfully suggest you reconsider your posted solutions.
