Same XML updates keep installing themselves !

I have XP SP2. Windows update keeps saying two updates are ready for
installation:
MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)
MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (925672)

But if I check my list of updates already installed each of these has
already successfully installed 3 times today, yet it keeps coming back
saying it needs to be installed. What can cause this, how can I stop it,
and can I do anything to see if they really are installed already?

Lorne,

Are they listed in Add/Remove Programs under Windows XP - Software Updates ?
If yes, then uninstall KB927978 first and then reboot.
Next, uninstall KB925672 and reboot.

Now install KB927978 ONLY and reboot once more.
Since KB929978 supercedes KB925672, it's not necessary to install the
latter.
IF either are not listed in ARP, open Folder Options in the Control
Panel. Click the View tab.
Under Files and Folders is 'Hidden files and folders'
Put a mark next to 'Show hidden files and folders'
Click Apply, OK.
Navigate to the WINDOWS directory (folder)
Open the $NtUninstallKB927978$ folder
Open the spuninst folder and run spuninst.exe
Restart and then do the same for the $NtUninstallKB925672$ folder.
Reboot.
Then download KB927978 from -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...B-6F18FE6921D4
Save it, do NOT run it
Close the browser and then install it
Reboot.

Something is corrupted somewhere.

- Neither update appears in Add/Remove Programs
- Neither appears in the windows folder (although other non-critical updates
downloaded afterwards do appear)
- checked again on the windows update web page and both show up as being
successfully installed 3 times.

Are there any files I can check version numbers on to see if the install
actually happened - it could be the update web page is wrong then I just
have to manually install KB929978.

KB927978 is listed as MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978) in ARP (Add/Remove Programs)
KB925672 is listed at the bottom, under Windows XP - Software Updates

If KB927978 has installed there will be a MSXML 4.0 folder in the
Program Files folder.

The installation log file for KB927978 will be found on the root drive,
the drive WINDOWS is installed on, usually C:\
The folder will be named with random numbers and letters and contain the
msmxl- log.
Each attempt to install it will generate another random named folder
containing the installation log.

The KB925672.log is located in %windir%

The fact that you can not click on the "hotspot" at Windows Update may
indicate a scripting issue.

Which antivirus program is installed ?
Which firewall are you using ?

Let's see what your findings are before we proceed.

Thanks - all sorted now as I was looking in the wrong place in ARP.

Out of interest my KB927978 log was on the D drive - Looks like is it linked
to the swap file location rather than windows. I have windows on C but the
swap file on D.

Glad to hear that, Lorne. You're welcome. FWIW, I *think* the log is
written to the partition with the largest amount of free space.
On my system, a dual boot, the log was written to the C:\ drive, which
has more free space then the drive where XP is installed to, D:\
On rebooting the log was deleted. Not sure if this is what is to be
expected when the log is written to the same drive as it's installed to.

Hi,

I too am having that same problem. I checked under the WINDOWS folder and
$NtUninstallKB927978$ doesn't appear. I do have a MSXML 4.0 folder under
Program Files but it is empty. I have ton's of the random folders on my c
drive. I have downloaded the patch from Microsoft, I have installed it by
itself and rebooted. It still doesn't show up in Add and Remove Programs. I
am prompted every 5-10 minutes to install updates and when I log off. Each
time it states it is finished but it doesn't install.

Help.
Jill

Jill (and MowGreen), I have been reading MowGreen's great advice about this umm...err..."learning opportunity"...(incidentally this only an issue for me since my 2 month old laptop required a new hardrive drive...don't ask!) but had still not been able to solve the issue, but you have thankfully highlighted the identical on-going issue which I am experiencing, so am really looking forward to MowGreen's help...
