Samsung DVD-ROM 616E drive not working pls help

i have tried everything i can think of it just wont work, i have gone through
the Troubleshooting with nothing. I have another cd-drive on my computer
thats working ok, its a Sony CD-ROM, and i've tried using the Driver Recovery
CD. But all that did was start the Instalation then quit after it instalized.

i have the same problem only i lost both of my cd rom drives..they are not
anywhere to be found and so what good is a computer without cd and dvd
drives..i have messed with this computer for a day and a half...there must be
something better to do at 70 years of age...can anyone help me thanks

On my HP Pavilion t329
the dvd-rom SAMSUNG SD-616E version F503 simpy does not work any more.
It worked recently (difficult to be precise ...).
My PC is 2 years old.
Windows sees the drive, says the drive has no problem, but inserting any CD
or DVD causes the message "Insert a Disk" to appear.
Maybe the drive is simply dead. But how to be sure?
Is it a software issue (service pack 2, I was told)?
Any advice is welcome before going to the store with my 30 $ .....
