I have just setup a namespace with replication and it appears to working ok,
when I give it to the users can they save directly into to the share that is
part of the namespace or should they only access the data through the
namespace share?

I have done both during testing and it didn't seem to matter but I was
advised not to save directly to the data share.

In terms of replication it makes no difference.

In terms of losing the reducancy DFS provides by disjoining the server from
the namespace, it makes no sense to ever give users the real server shares.
In fact it's good practice to use hidden shares on the servers and hide the
DFS tab on client machines.
